Member of the Federation of Bloodstock Agents of Australia
AN OWNER’S DREAM
A highlight for Laurel Oak owners was at Flemington on VRC Derby Day 2003 when Ancient Song, ridden by Scott Seamer, defeated Into The Night in the Group One Salinger.

Both horses were purchased on the recommendation of Laurel Oak.

Both horses were raced by syndicates formed and managed by Laurel Oak.

Both horses were produced from matings recommended by Brain Pedigree Analysis.

Both horses are great examples of how Laurel Oak can make racehorse ownership Easy and Enjoyable for you.

How Laurel Oak can make racehorse ownership EASY for you !

In its simplest form Laurel Oak makes it as easy as possible for you to become a racehorse owner because we provide you with tremendous flexibility in the size and style of ownership that you can choose.

You decide the size of ownership that best suits you!

You decide on the style of ownership that best suits!

While “traditional syndications” are occasionally offered through Laurel Oak Thoroughbreds, the main way that we can help you become a racehorse owner is to work closely with you and through our network of owners and clients source, as agent on your behalf, horses will suit what you would enjoy.

There is an article titled the “Evolution of Laurel Oak and how we can make racehorse ownership Easy and Enjoyable for you” which explains this in more detail and how this saves you money, however some examples for how this works are:

  • If you would like a share in a going-concern racehorse then we can approach our clients to find one that suits you. Often we have clients whose circumstances change and they would be happy to sell their share if approached.
  • If you are looking for a share in a new yearling we can pre-form a syndicate of like-minded owners and buy a yearling for you (and you are welcome to come to the sales when we buy the horse).
  • If you are looking for a lease share in a horse we can approach our network of breeder clients to source a suitable horse for you.
  • If you are looking for a share in commercial quality race fillies to race then breed from later then we can help source these for you as well. (We can also advise you on the guidelines for tax-effectiveness of breeding related income and expenditure or can put you in touch with professionals to provide you with such advice.)
  • If you are just after a bit of racing fun for a small outlay then we can help you find suitable horses as well. A good example is one syndicate of 16 that has been going for about four years that pays $90 per month each, and they have a 20% lease share in two or three horses at any one time. While they individually each race 1/80th of each horse, it is a very social group that enjoys their racing and generally have a very good time. Many of them have graduated into larger ownership but still retain their interest in this syndicate for the social enjoyment. One of their horses ran in a Group One race on Epsom Day and they had a fun day with about 30 owners, family and friends there!

The above are just examples of the types of ownership that are available to you.

There is tremendous flexibility in the size of share that you can take. In the above examples you could in most instances have a large an interest as you like eg 50% of the horse or larger, or as small as a 2.5% share. You can decide what suits you, and we will try and find a suitable horse for you.

If we do not think we can find the right horse for you we will let you know. To find the right horse for you may take 5 minutes, 5 weeks or 5 months depending on the circumstances.

We will only source horses that we believe will be successful, which are, either already managed by Laurel Oak, or which we would be happy to manage in the future and put our name to. We are keen to maintain Laurel Oak’s outstanding strike-rate of getting horses selected to the races, and of successful horses, and we particularly want you to be a happy and successful long-term client.

EXAMPLES OF HOW LAUREL OAK SYNDICATES HAVE BEEN CREATED.

The best way to highlight to you the great flexibility that we can provide you with in becoming a racehorse owner is to give you an example of how the ownership structure of some of our better known horses and recent winners was created.

INTO THE NIGHT – trainer Keith Dryden approached us before the yearling sales season commenced and indicated that he was looking to buy a better quality horse at the upcoming sales and would Laurel Oak like to be involved.  The answer was ‘yes’ and a syndicate was formed of Keith Dryden clients and Laurel Oak clients to buy a better quality horse.  We at Laurel Oak did the preliminary catalogue work, arrived at the sale several days earlier and did the leg work to come up with a short list for Keith to inspect when he arrived and Into The Night was on that list.  Keith reduced that list to an even shorter list of six, which was then Brain analysed and the standout mating was Into The Night.  Keith “stretched the friendship” by bidding $20,000 above the agreed limit but we understood because after many days work he was the only horse that received the tick in all boxes after inspection and pedigree analysis.  In the end there were around fourteen owners in Into The Night with Laurel Oak clients owning from 20% down to as small as 1.25%.  While normally 2.5% is as low as we normally go with the ownership options in this case the cost of the horse suited two clients to go half of that amount.  The small size of the share did not stop them from travelling around Australia to see the horse race in Group races and, indeed, go on to race in Hong Kong in the International Sprint.

ANCIENT SONG – Ancient Song was initially bred and raced by a Brain Pedigree Analysis client and we followed her career with great interest.  Then, in 2003, our client pedigree analysed Ancient Song with a view to retiring her to stud.  Subsequent to that he rang to say that he might consider selling her.  Like most other bloodstock agents in Australia we have clients on the lookout for high quality race fillies that will become future commercial broodmares.  A syndicate of Laurel Oak owners was formed to buy her and she went on to become a Group 1 winning mare that is now at stud. She earned over $400,000 in one season of racing.  While the syndicate was built around a majority shareholding owned by Ramsey Pastoral Company as well as other clients who have commercial breeding interests who had 10% or 20% shares in the mare, it also suited to balance up the ownership to have some 2.5% owners who went along for a very enjoyable ride.

POWER OF LOVE – we have many clients who run commercial tax-effective breeding operations involving racing fillies with the intention of retiring them to stud to breed for sale.  We are constantly on the lookout at yearling sales for fillies that will suit their needs.  At the New Zealand Yearling Sale in 2003 we found a well-put together Bahhare filly that was already a half sister to two Stakes placed horses, one of which was a promising 3yo stayer in New Zealand.  After getting a high rating from Brain Pedigree Analysis we bought the filly for $NZ30,000 for two clients and kept a share in her ourselves.  One of the breeder clients owning her prefers to lease out all or part of his ownership interest for racing purposes and consequently lease shares became available in Power Of Love.  We have many clients who simply enjoy their racing and prefer leasing to buying so the lease shares that were available were placed with clients who were on the lookout for lease shares.  These include clients with as small as a 5% lease share.

KLONDIKE KID – there are certain pedigree patterns that have a greater likelihood of working than others and there is a particular style of inbreeding to prominent females in a pedigree that is difficult to achieve or create but from our two experiences with this particular pattern it works very well.  One horse that was bought with this particular pattern won nineteen races (Tehuacan) while another, which was deliberately bred this way (Rockin Roller) threatened to be a good horse before injury restricted him to just four wins.  Eldorada was a filly that was owned and raced by Laurel Oak clients and retired from racing and kept by several of her owners to be a commercial broodmare as she was half sister to a stakes-winner.  The opportunity was there to create this particular pedigree pattern that we previously had success with and the mare was sent to little known stallion American Odyssey.  After producing a good looking colt it became quite apparent that American Odyssey was not going to be commercial so we recommended to the owners that they would be better off keeping him and leasing the horse out rather than sacrificing him for a low price in the sale ring.  Some of the breeder owners retained all or part of their ownership interests for racing purposes while others leased their share out and once again we had clients who were on the lookout for likely racing prospects so we were able to meet their demand as well.  The result is a promising horse that at the time of writing has one win and two placings from three career starts.

TEXARCANA – this filly was bred by a Laurel Oak breeding syndicate and when the time came to decide whether she goes to the yearling sales we recommended against because the filly was very well put together but toed out prominently in front.  While likely to be sound for racing, her conformation would have seen her heavily marked down in the sale ring and she would almost certainly have sold at a considerable loss, particularly because at that stage her sire More Than Ready had not achieved the success he now has.  Once again we had clients looking for lease interests and some of the syndicate that bred Texarcana retained their share for racing while others were happy to lease out all or part of their ownership share for racing.  If all goes well the owners will have a commercial mare to retire to stud at the end of her racing career while the lessees will have a fun time with a successful racehorse.

LANG SUPREMACY – we also have many clients looking for more orthodox ownership and that’s what Lang Supremacy represents.  His syndicate of owners is made up of ownership ranging from 50% of the horse down to 2.5%.  He was bought at the yearling sales and he had made our inspection list because he was bred by a Brain Pedigree Analysis client to a recommended mating.  We liked what we saw at the sales and consequently he was purchased for a syndicate of owners for $30,000.

MIRACLE QUEEN – as well as buying racing fillies for our commercial breeder clients we also recommend the purchase of broodmares.  One of the very first such recommendations was Regency Fair for two of our breeder clients.  The Regency Fair subsequently produced a Geiger Counter filly to a Brain recommended mating which is a very good type and expectations were that she would sell well as a yearling.  However, a paddock accident caused superficial scarring on her hind leg and prevented her from being able to go to the sales.  Six months later when the scarring had healed and she received a veterinary all clear we were able to sell part of her to other clients who were looking to race and then breed in the future.

The above examples highlight the tremendous flexibility that we can offer you as an owner of racehorses or broodmares.  Whether you are breeding commercially, breeding as a hobby, racing with ownership interests, racing with lease interests, whether the ownership size is above 50% or as low as a 1.25%, there are options available for you or can be sourced for you.  If you contact us and let Laurel Oak Bloodstock know what style or size of ownership you are looking for then we can source the opportunities for you.
